Our goal is to help every person in Flagstaff County gain the basic reading, writing, and number skills they need.
The Flagstaff Literacy Project is a special project of the Flagstaff Community Adult Learning Council. It began in 1990. We match
volunteer tutors with adults who want to improve their reading, writing, and number skills. Some of our students are newcomers to
Canada. Others are simply adults who do not have the skills they need. With the help of their tutors, they work towards their goals,
to "build their skills". The Project provides training, learning resources and support to the student-tutor pairs.
We also offer family literacy programs such as "Books for Babies", "Rhymes that Bind", "Tips and Games", and "Storysacks". These
are offered as requested, whenever funding is available. The Literacy Advisory Committee is responsible for the Literacy Project.
It reports to the Flagstaff Community Adult Learning Council. The Council hires a Literacy Coordinator to work with the students
and tutors. Our office is open 3 days a week in the Killam Learning Center.
Alberta Advanced Education (Community Programs Branch) funds the operation of the volunteer tutor program. Funding for other
services, such as family literacy programs, comes from grants and donations.

Time commitment is about 2 hours per week.

Pass the word to people in our community. Most people find solutions by word of mouth. Your encouragement may be the deciding
